Day 4 – Chocolate Lasagna

As soon as this pin showed up in my feed it quickly moved to the top of my list. They had me at Oreos®. Oh my biggest processed food weakness!

DSCN1473

The original recipe said to mix in the melted butter by hand after crushing the Oreos®. Ain’t no body got time for that! I left the crushed cookies in the food processor then poured in the butter and just used the food processor to mix it all up. I also went ahead and used the full stick of butter b/c I hate having random butter ends laying around.

DSCN1467

At this point it’s ok to be tempted to get a spoon and eat the yumminess right out of the bowl. This is where I often get caught up when I make Oreo® balls and never get around to dipping them.

DSCN1470

I used my Pampered Chef Easy Accent Decorator
to apply the cool whip on top in fluffy peaks. I wish there had been more of the cream cheese layer, so if I made it again I’d probably double that section.

Day 3 – Make Your Own Slime

Sundays are a day for rest, well, as much rest as one can have as the Captain of Chaos. Pancake feed at church this afternoon and then mostly just hanging out with the kids. We took a little time to try out a pin for the 30 Day Pinterest Challenge. I’m totally loving having a commitment to getting a little something done each day. It’s fun that they are outside of my regular shop projects. It almost feels like doing something for me. Today’s was more for the kids though.

We started with this pin on pinterest. There are a number of similar ones available, but they all have the same basic idea. Equal parts glue and liquid starch with a little food coloring. Easy enough right? I have a vague recollection of doing this in middle school science class.

Up front this is not a quick and tidy experiment. Because Turkey has sensory issues this meant A LOT of hand washing for us. I’m sure it would’ve been quicker had it not been for this minor hang up.

We gathered our supplies:

DSCN1452

I totally lamented that the clear school glue cost like 3 times as much as the regular stuff. It’s robbery I swear! You may recall that I make my own homemade laundry starch, but we lucked out and Grandpa had some we could borrow. I was excited to try out our neon food dyes. I also decided it would be fun to add a little flavoring to make them smell yummy. If we learned anything from Mr. Sketch® markers in our childhood it’s that everything’s more fun when it smells yummy.

DSCN1453

We start by adding the glue and starch, then mixed in the coloring and flavoring.

DSCN1460We stirred it with a spoon until it started to goop up then got our hands dirty.DSCN1454

We were left with quite a bit of liquid in the bowl when we took the lump out to knead it by hand. It then took quite a bit of time to get it where it wasn’t wet and sloppy and more resembled the slime we were shooting for.

DSCN1455 DSCN1456Bean’s was extra stringy and since we used orange flavoring kinda smelled like citrus cleaner.
DSCN1459

DSCN1465

The Raspberry one seemed to have the most stretch. It was opaque because we used the white school glue.

DSCN1463

I think the Coconut blue was my favorite once we finally got it into a solid lump.
DSCN1461We bagged them up to save to another day.

DSCN1466

They were already begging to play with it again after dinner. I was really proud of Turkey for actually getting his hands into it. even though he doesn’t like for his hands to be icky like that. He was having an extra good day today. He never likes to wear button up shirts because of the way they feel, but today he was willing to dress up for church. He even put on a funny little clip on tie. He refused to let me tuck in his shirt, but we’ll take the victories we can.

Tomorrow we take on some chocolate lasagna!

Day 2 – The “Miracle” Cleaner

Happy Pinterest Challenge Day 2! I’ve spent 2 days running around like a crazy person getting all the kidlets registered for school. I’m most traumatized by the idea that I have a high schooler. I can still so vividly remember being in high school, so this hardly seems possible.

I still managed to try something on my pinterest today though. This pin has been floating around since my early pinteresting days and in it’s various incarnations is repinned hundreds of times.

I already do a lot of cleaning with baking soda and peroxide anyway, so putting them together wasn’t much of a stretch. I looked around and realized I didn’t have a gunky cookie sheet because I mostly cook on stoneware. What I did have is a super gunky kettle. We use it everyday and it just sets on the stove top and collects all the stuff from cooking.  It’s not like we’ve never washed the thing it’s just got build up. Couldn’t ask for a much better “before” picture though.

20140801_142638

So I gathered up my “ingredients”, peroxide and baking soda. Notice my inverted bag of baking soda, someone was super helpful opening it.
20140801_142950

I mixed them into a paste and started scrubbing. The pin says you can use your fingers, but I like my happy little homemade knit scrubby. I sometimes have these listed in my shop.

20140801_143625

Just keep scrubbing, actually we stopped to take an in progress picture.

20140801_143517

Ooh shiny! The actual kettle took a bit more elbow grease and had some spots I couldn’t quite get into, but even the kids were impressed with how clean it was.
20140801_150851

I can’t say the same for my project towel I put down. I had a baking soda mess caked all over it. I suppose I could have avoided that by just doing the whole thing over the sink, but it did take a little while to apply and scrub.

20140801_150902

Overall, I’d call this an easy Pinterest success. What have you tried so far?

Day 1 – Dipped Bananas

Welcome to the 30 Day Pinterest Challenge where I attempt to work my way through 30 days of things I find on Pinterest. You can read further details on my original post.

I should have known this one was doomed from the beginning when your kids eat your key ingredient the first day you attempt to do it and then the second try you find your camera is dead and needs charged. Yay for cell phone pictures! I actually went this route because I figured it’d be easy and I’d like to start out on a successful note. It’s amazing how horribly wrong an essentially 2 ingredient project can go.

Growing up my mom always made dipped banana-sicles. Like this:

You can find the pin here: http://www.pinterest.com/pin/29554941279637310/

My complaint with these was always that as a kid they were kinda hard to bite into once frozen solid. Enter these little bits of awesomeness from Dole ®

I’ve been known to buy and eat these in the car ride home. Everything to love about the treat from my childhood in an easy to eat while hiding behind a bathroom door form. Ever tried to shove a whole candy bar in your mouth before your kid notices you’re eating something they might feel they have a right to? Dippers, yay; full banana-sicle, fail.

But these have to be simple to make at home right? Enter this pin:

Frozen banana bites

I even skipped the peanut butter for simplicity’s sake.

Starting out I knew going in that my bananas were ripper than they should have been. You want ones that are just pass the green and still firm. Ours had already started to brown in spots, but I figured I could make it work. Did you know that squeezing bananas at the end makes them easier to open and remove the little seed? Try it, your mind will be blown.

20140729_111859

Then we sliced up our starting to brown bananas. See the nice little half inch slices, I was feeling pretty good at this point seeing them all set up on the parchment lined cookie sheet that we then threw into the freezer and went to run errands and do chores.

20140729_113033

We even took a bit of time to slice up all the monster zucchinis from the garden. Handy tip, if you sort them in to bags already in 1,2, and 3 cup portions then they are ready to thaw for your recipes. We enjoy yummy muffins and breads all winter using this method.

zucchini 2

At least that task was a success. Next we melt up our chocolate for dipping. I add a little shortening to my chocolate to give it that candy store shine. About 1 TBS to a cup of chocolate and mix it while melting.

20140729_140432

This is where my common sense flew out the window. I had to make room in the freezer for all the zucchini bags, so I pulled out the tray of the bananas. However, I hadn’t gotten the chocolate all melted first and sorely underestimated the heat index in my kitchen. Bananas melting faster than I could dip them lead to a less than pleasant experience, next time we’ll do smaller batches instead of attempting to rush through them all. Using a for helps the chocolate drip off the bottom when dipping, though the melty bananas helped everything slide off the bottom anyway. I delegated the sprinkle job to Eldest who decided I meant sprinkles and peanuts rather than one or the other.

20140729_142940

You can see where the goop came out of the bottoms a bit. They tasted nummy once they froze again, but left something to be desired in the looks department. Hey, it’s what’s inside that counts, right? Too bad what’s inside is slightly over ripened twice froze banana.

I will do these again, but probably on a day when I have a little less going on and don’t forget my basic kitchening skills. Only 29 more days to go!

You’re Beautiful

To the man at the Redbox, thank you. I have no idea how long you saw me fiddle with the machine nor do I know what spurred your compliment. What you didn’t see is that it was my second trip to that same machine. I had tried when we entered the store, but the kids who left their manners at home couldn’t sit still long enough for me to pick something because the Lego Movie was out again, so I gave up and rushed in to grab the few things I needed all the while wishing I had left them at home. Home, where I should’ve been motivated enough to cook a meal instead of running up to grab something some hourly waged worker had prepared. I stood with my hair pulled up to battle the humidity and sweat from cleaning a house all morning. Hours of really just cleaning behind children attempting to “help”. Eventually as I sat on my knees scrubbing baseboards realizing it would never be good enough for our move out checklist I contemplated a maid service.

What you likely didn’t notice was the pint of Ben & Jerry’s I intended to sulk in bed and eat alone tonight because of a million factors that make me feel stressed and minimized. You didn’t note that I am the heaviest I’ve been in my life and while I’m so disgusted about it my life is so chaotic right now I hardly have the energy to think of doing anything about it let alone actually acting on the desire to change it right now. I said “huh?” because the words were so foreign to me and I hardly recognized them as words that apply. But you took a minute to not only say them, but repeat them. I wear a ring and with kids in tow I can only assume you are a brother, father, friend etc that understands when a random frazzled woman needs to hear something affirming. And it was incredibly nice and almost brought me to tears sitting in my car. I have rarely given any thought to anyone noticing me as I wonder through my day to day bubble and yet someone did and took the moment just to say “you’re beautiful”. And I can’t help but ponder God knew I needed to hear something today to make me feel better for all my failures and frustrations of the day. That when I struggle to hear his words be finds a louder voice.

Made of Heart Monday Week of July 14th

Another crazy week has come and gone. We’re still in the midst of moving. Seems every time we move I say never again and then I find myself doing it AGAIN. I’m most excited about my new craft space. It’s getting more attention than my own room, though I need to get in gear in the kitchen. I can’t wait to start creating and cooking again. I also need to have things ready for my 30 Day Pinterest Challenge starting in a couple weeks.

A new week also brings a new feature from our link up. Our most clicked item was this grab bag  for button earrings from Dena Liston Designs. If you love surprises you can get 3 sets for a steal at $15. So much cute to play up your wardrobe or have on hand for easy gifts, but I bet you’ll want to keep them all for yourself.

Our runner up last week was Chamorrita Made with her Kickasserole dish. This is perfect for the football lover in your life and a great way to recognize your pan at those tailgating parties. Even if your team loses you’re dish will be a win.

30 Day Pinterest Challenge

Since joining the masses and becoming addicted to Pinterest I’ve amassed over 5,000 pins and I’m still adding. Anyone else a bipolar pinner? Fruit smoothie, running tips, cute exercise wear, oh triple chocolate cake with Oreos®, caramel, and marshmallow fluff! Now which of those do you think is the most likely to happen? Can we say cake? My serial pinning has resulted in more time pinning and not enough time being productive and actually putting those pins into action.

Now is the time! Starting August 1st I will be issuing a 30 Day Pinterest Challenge. Better than 30 days of squats or going gluten free. That’s right; for 30 days (well 31, but who’s counting) I will be trying a new pin from my Pinterest boards each day. I make no guarantees that everything will be amazing, but it will be a fun adventure. I do promise my hair will become a new color, I will finally learn chainmaille jewelry, and I will attempt things from a variety of categories.

If you want to play along and try your own 30 Day Pinterest Challenge we want to know about it. Use #30daypinterestchallenge on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook etc so we can see what you’ve been up to. Start picking your pins now. I’ve created a Pinterest board to keep track of my challenges and get my list for supplies etc. If you have any suggestions on pins you’d like to see me try feel free to link them and they might make my list.

PINTEREST CHALLENGE

You now have 3 weeks to start planning your projects and picking up your ingredients/supplies or just work up the nerve to try that project you’ve been afraid of. Don’t let this be you:
